There are many "tricks" and "tweaks" to be learned and discovered by all users, as well as enhancements and additional functionality to be added in the future. Please see the FAQ and Zimbra how to's for further knowledge. The Zimbra help is an excellent resource as well.

At the right of this page under software training links there are a number of Zimbra training videos that you may find useful.

As usual, we are always happy to assist with any Zimbra issues you may have.

The district completed and piloting and testing Thin Client technologies at two schools: KELSET Elementary School (Schoolwide) and Stelly's Secondary School (Library). Development work is on-going and the system is now stable and functional. The purpose of the pilots was to determine the viability of deploying a different strategy with a view to combining the best of low hardware costs, utilizing Open Source software in conjunction with commercial software and reducing maintenance and support.

At this time the tech plan has been approved by the Trustees and Implementation is scheduled and in-progress with 6 elementary schools completed and the first middle school scheduled for early March 2010.

Elementary School Thin Client Implementation Schedule

What is Ubuntu?

How can I learn more about this initiative?
Please take a look at the Tech Plan below which describes the Linux initiative in detail.

What will the model look like at Elementary schools, Middle schools and Secondary Schools?

Network

Upgrades to the physical networks will be made to current standards. These upgrades will make for faster more reliable data transfer.

Initiatives that this will help are:
  • BCeSIS - a province wide student database that is housed at a provincial government site
  • Diskless system - the new linux system that we are moving to is centrally located at each school (more on this below)
Hardware such as switches and routers will be upgraded to faster, smarter models which also help in making data transfer more reliable.

Hardware

All CRT monitors will be replaced with energy efficient LCD screens.
PC's running the Ubuntu OS will do so using a diskless model where all processing power is distributed across the system and data storage is located centrally at each school.

Software

Open source software will be used where possible. Where this type of software is not available such as in some cases for student services, PCs and the required software will be made available using Microsoft operating system.

Some open source software includes:
Firefox - to replace Internet Explorer
OpenOffice - to replace Microsoft Office suite
Scribus - desktop publishing
MPlayer - replacing MS MediaPlayer
The Gimp - replacing Adobe PhotoShop
Dia - replacing Microsoft Visio
FreeMind - replacing Inspiration
Google Picasa 3
Gimp - to replace any MS based image editor
and a host of other open source software
